Description:  Turkoman rugs and carpets are woven in the region east of the Caspian Sea known as West Turkestan, populated by nomadic tribes. The design element that distinguishes this type of rug is the gul medallion, which is usually octagonal in shape, and includes smaller geometric elements inside. These medallions are used as field decorations often arranged in parallel or offset columns. Each tribe had their own distinctive tribal emblem or gul. This late 19th century example is a product of the Tekke, the largest tribe in the region.
